A Space Birthday Party Can be Out of this World! Kathryn D. from Tuscon shares her inspiration for an asteroid filled party of galactic proportions.
One great birthday party idea that my sons always love is an outerspace birthday party theme.
Space Birthday Party Decoration Ideas : Decorations are really easy and inexpensive.
The day before the party, I decorate the birthday room with silver and black streamers. I also order gold and silver metallic balloons for some fun floating "stars".
Then, I cover up the windows with large black construction paper (the kind school teachers often use), and try to create a dark, "space-y" environment.
Make sure the room isn't too dark if this is a little kid's party! You don't want little kids bumping into each other and getting injured.
I also stick glow-in-the-dark stars and moons up on the ceiling and furniture and hand out glow sticks to the kids when they come in. They all love this part!
As for the music, I try to find some slow, eerie kind to set the mood. Good cd's include the Star Wars or Star Trek movie music.
Then after a while I switch to kid-friendly pop or general use birthday music.
You can't have a space birthday party without an intergalactic cake. I'm not fancy so I don't make one that looks like a space shuttle or space ship.
What I do is cover the whole cake with a black fondant and decorate it with white fondant stars and planets.
The cake that I make is usually three tiers of different flavors to give the kids some variety to choose from. That way everyone will get their favorite slice.
This past birthday, I made the bottom tier (Pillsbury) Funfetti cake with funfetti frosting in between, the middle tier chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, and the top tier vanilla cake with strawberry frosting. Then, I stack the tiers and decorate!
A really cool thing is if you can find gummy moons and stars. I did that one year and decorated the top with those. Another time I found space shuttle lollipops and stuck one in each cake slice, like it was ready for takeoff.
Also, if I have time, I let my sons make little space aliens with marzipan and arrange them around the cake. A metallic star ornamental piece can also be added for a nice touch. I get so many compliments for this cake every single time I do it! My sons love this theme party and it's pretty easy to do. I'm sure you'll have a great time with it!
The most popular game that I've done is the "Galaxy Dance". What we do is have the kids all get together in the middle of the room.
An adult turns on and off the music. Every time the music comes on the kids do their best galaxy dance. Then the music stops and they have to freeze in place. We go back and forth like this awarding a prize each time.
I make certificates ahead of time that have the different planet names on them. So one kid will win "best Jupiter dance" and get the Jupiter certificate and a prize.
The next gets Mars, Saturn etc. I make enough certificates so that everyone will win.
The kids that win first sit down and watch the other ones. Everyone loves this game!
