Last year, my husband and I put together a birthday party for our five-year-old son who loves Japanese animation.

We bought Pokemon plates, napkins and party favors and decorated our home with yellow, blue and red streamers and balloons. We were able to special order a cake in the shape of Pikachu.

For activities, my husband, who is an artist, painted a large board for the kids to use for pin-the-tail-on-Pikachu, and we purchased three Pokemon costumes at the local party supply store for the children with which to play dress-up.

My son already had an Ash Ketcham Halloween costume and we let him wear it for the party. The kids had so much fun role-playing in the costumes with my niece and nephew who agreed to pretend to be Jessie and James the entire time.

My husband also painted a board with several characters from Pokemon and cut holes out for their heads so that the children could poke their own heads through for photos. We had a Pokemon CD playing on repeat in the background.

Pokemon Party Favors

We had packs of Pokemon cards for all of the children to take home in their gift bags, and we had special thick paper pre-cut so that the party goers could draw their own characters. We laminated the cards for them so that they each had a nice personalized keepsake.

Also included in the gift bags were Pokemon sugar cookies that my sister and I had prepared on the previous day. The gift bags were actually these giant plastic eggs that I had purchased online and painted at home to look like Poke balls.

Towards the conclusion of the party, the kids were beginning to get a little tired, so we allowed them to watch rented Pokemon DVDs in our living room. We turned off the lights, draped the windows, and made sure to pass around several bowls of popcorn. It ended up being a lot of preparation for the adults, but the children, especially my son, loved the entire experience!
