Party like it’s 1960! Forget Prince’s "Party like it’s 1999", one of the best 50th birthday parties I have ever been to took everyone back to 1960, the birth year of the birthday girl.
Invites were sent out looking like old versions of newspapers, and everyone was instructed to come in 1960s dress. The variety of costumes was incredible!
There were several John Lennon look-a-likes, as well as numerous disco divas, complete with flares and min-skirts! Even the children got into the spirit of things with tie-dye t-shirts and big bandanas.
I think the best parties are fancy dress parties, and the best fancy dress parties are the ones where everyone turns up in full fancy dress, and I don’t think there was a single person out of place!
All the music came from the year of 1960, with a special celebration of the song that was number 1 on her birthday. The DJ really got everyone into the swing of things, playing some great tunes and making sure that all the guests were on the dance floor all night long.
By far and away the best part of the night was the decoration. So much detail had gone in to finding all the major newspapers from 1960, and these had been lovingly laid out on the walls, so that anyone who didn’t want to dance, or just needed to rest their legs, had an entertaining read.
Beside the bar was the copy of each national newspaper that was published on the day that she was born; how they got hold of them I don’t know!
The final piece of the jigsaw was the birthday cake, which was absolutely enormous, and was simply ringed with all the numbers from 1 to 50 around the sides. Such a simple idea, but it looked incredibly effective. I guess it also saved on having to have a cake from the 1960s!
