We did my mother in-law's birthday when she turned 50. We decided on an "Over The Hill" party as the perfect theme for her 50th birthday party. We had it as a surprise party.
The colors for the decor were black, grey, white and purple and there were tombstones and skeletons as decor. We had silver and purple balloons filled with helium all throughout the house as well as outside.
I can’t say we had many games, just décor as the main attraction. We did have blowers, confetti and streamers, just to make her feel a little young at heart. Her cake was black forest, decorated with ‘dirt’ (crumbled cookies) on top with tombstones with her year of birth (1954) all over them. We also had skeletons coming out from behind them.
We had her party after returning from church. I can’t say she was thrilled... she was honestly a little insulted but took it pretty well. I think women just don’t take getting older very well.
If you have a man, or someone with a better sense of humor, you could incorporate some graphics of old and wrinkled people. This would add a sense of comedy to the party.
Another good idea is to have pictures of the birthday person as a baby and celebrate milestones through out their life up until their 50th birthday. Baby photos, first walk, first day of school, first date, high school graduation, wedding, birth of their children and grand children and so on.
This would be simply a celebration of the person’s life without poking fun of them. It would be smart to also celebrate milestones in their children’s lives, if they have any, because as a parent those are important times in your own life as well.
When my husband turns 50, I’m not sure what we will do. Probably a "glad you made it this far" type of party!
