Get some thin sheets of styrofoam from the craft store (it's inexpensive) and make styrofoam cut outs of child size monster trucks painted in all shades.
What you do is cut the sheets into four rectangles, with the sides of the truck rectangles being wider than the front and backs. Then you cut out circles for the wheels. Hot glue the entire thing together and then get to painting! If you want, use a pie plate as a steering wheel. You can attach it to the front inside of the truck with a washer and screw.
They make fun backdrops for picture purposes too. Take digital, or polaroid shots of kids in the Styrofoam trucks, They go nuts over it.
Get a poster of a monster truck and hang it on the door. Write your child's name on the truck and put a picture of their face in the drivers side window.
Cake Ideas: If you have the funds to buy an outstanding cake for this theme, then terrific, go out and buy a really cool monster truck cake. If not, do not even worry about it.
Buy a box cake, prepare it yourself, and decorate it. Get some white frosting and some food coloring, Then hit the cheap toy store, and find a truck that fits the theme. Use your imagination. Use the food coloring to dye white frosting for colors you will need. Use the white frosting as a background and do your thing.
AN EXAMPLE: Create a Rocky looking trail going across the cake. Candy is a perfect prop to use for rocks. Make one of the Rocks a bit bigger than the rest, preferably close to the center. Place your chosen truck in a position to look as if it is trying to climb up over the rock. Boys love the idea of being able to Climb mountains one day in their Big trucks.
You need games to help incorporate the theme. Here's three awesome ideas for monster truck birthday games:
Help him find them and bring them home. What you will need: A sand box and about 25-50 little cars and trucks. Most likely you will have tons of these in your home, without having to go out and buy them.
How to play: Bury all the cars and trucks in the sand box before the party. When the children are ready to play the game, you explain to them the dilemma. Birthday boy lost his cars and trucks. Whomever finds the most wins a prize.
Kids love this game. Its like easter, but your hunting for trucks and not eggs.
It's monster truck racing time. Get all the kids geared up. Have them choose their favorite toy truck from the game before. When each kid has chosen a truck have them get in a line.
The boys will race around the track holding their toy trucks in their hands. (Best if you have a backyard or are doing this at the park or beach. It needs to be outdoors.) Show them where the track is, or if you can, put up little race flags stuck in the ground to show them the track.
The rules are, they have to make monster truck sounds. There should be lots of revving and screeching, and motor sounds coming out of their mouths. The winner isn't the first one to finish the track, it's the one who makes the best monster truck noises!
Have an adult act as a sports commentator throughout the truck rally, so the kids hear them commenting on how well the race is going.
This is a pinata idea using a truck shaped pinata. Instead of hanging it and letting the kids swing at it crazily make a special game out of it.
Use two good pieces of rope and tie them to both ends of the pinata. Be sure to tie them so that they are tight and will not come off when tugged.
Two adults will need to man the ropes, tug of war style. (Without the yanking and pulling. It's more of a swaying action.)
The object is to slide the truck around in front of the blindfolded child like its cruising along the road in forward and reverse. Of course, the adults and all the boys need to make loud truck sounds the whole time the child is swinging. It will only add to the fun!
