Hilarious Fiftieth Birthday Funeral Theme

by John Upton
(New York)

My friends know I have always had a good sense of humor, and they do, too. So, for my Fiftieth Birthday they threw a party for me at a local restaurant with a rather unusual theme.

They had chosen the theme, which is hard to describe, but let me just say that it was "funereal". They wanted to laughingly say "goodbye" to my youth. In other words we were all in mourning for my getting older.

Sound depressing? Believe me it was not! It was all in fun and it was hilarious. First of all, everyone, including myself (it was not a surprise party), came dressed in black with just a touch or two of white.

The ceiling of the little private room we were in was festooned with black and white balloons. There were sprays of dyed black flowers on pedestals in each corner. The buffet table was draped with black bunting.

Servers were weaving in and out of the guests bearing trays of Black Russians, Black Sambuca and Johnny Walker Black scotch. My friends had obviously not skimped on the expense!

The music that was playing in the background was from the Fifties, which is when we were all in high school. So the songs were very familiar to everyone and when we weren't chatting to each other, we were singing along with Elvis or doing the lindy hop to some rock and roll song.

But the piece de resistance was when the lights in the room were dimmed. The room was then lit mostly from the numerous flickering black candles that had been placed all around it.

Everyone began singing "Happy Birthday" and servers then appeared carrying a huge black-candle covered cake, chocolate layer cake, of course! It sure was different, and funny and lots of fun. Not a funeral birthday at all.
