Want fire truck birthday party ideas to get your kids bash blazing! Patti from Orient, Ohio shares her ideas for throwing the best fireman birthday party theme! Can you guess how she got real firefighters to show up at her son's party? (I'll give you a hint. It wasn't because of a fire!)
A firefighter theme party suitable for preschool to early elementary age kids. My son was fascinated by fire trucks, fire stations, and fire fighters and was always pretending to be a fireman.
So for his fourth birthday we decided to do a fire truck theme.
While visiting our local fire station during a fire safety awareness open house, the fire fighters had mentioned that they visit birthday parties. I think they do this to familiarize kids with fire fighters so they won't be afraid of them.
So we took advantage of this free entertainment, and called them a few months in advance to schedule.
As my son's friends arrived at the party, we handed out balloon "fire hoses" made from long, thin balloons.
Then we headed to the back yard for a game. It was a throw-the-ball-in-the-bucket game. I told the kids there was a fire in the buckets and they had to put it out by throwing the balls of water (blue colored balls) into each bucket.
I put small prizes like bubble gum, candy, and pencils in the buckets. The prizes got progressively bigger or better as the buckets got farther away.
The last bucket had bottles of bubbles shaped like firemen and Hot Wheels fire trucks. I had treat bags for the kids to put all their loot in.
A Few of the Kids Looking at the Fire Truck
After the game the firefighters arrived. They pulled up in front of our house with a fire truck and an ambulance.
Everyone was so excited to see them. They opened the trucks for the kids to explore. They had gear the kids could try on.
They answered any questions the kids had about the equipment. They even ran lights and sirens. The kids played on the trucks for about 20 minutes. Then the fire fighters said their goodbyes and drove away.
Everyone headed inside for cake and ice cream. I made a cake shaped like a fire truck. I used a 9x13 pan and loaf pans to make a truck base and a raised cab on front. I covered it with red icing.
Then I used white icing to make the windows and windshield. I used black icing for the windshield wipers and other accents. I used oreo cookies for the wheels, Dots candy for the lights, mandm's and Mike and Ike's for buttons and knobs, and black licorice for ladders and hoses.
It was so much fun to make because the shape is pretty simple to achieve and decorating it is only limited by your imagination. Everyone oohed and aahed over it.
I covered the tables with red and yellow table cloths, fire truck themed plates and cups, red and yellow napkins, and red and yellow forks. At each place setting I had fire truck shaped whistles for the kids.
All the materials I found at my local party store. My husband bought a mobile with old fashioned fire trucks on it that he found at a Pottery Barn outlet store for about $5.
We hung it over the table and it made a nice decoration. Afterwards we hung it in our son's room. The whole neighborhood talked for weeks about what a great party it was and how much fun they had.
