An easy theme for many age groups is a fairy birthday party.

Fairies, the classic Tinkerbell variety for the younger girls, and a more Shakespearean, Midsummer Night's Dream themed dinner party for the older crowd.

I've done two fairy birthday parties so far. One for my 8 year old and one for my fifteen year old. Both were really different.

Young Fairy Birthday Party Ideas : Ages 4-12

For a young girls birthday party, we decided to go all out with costumes and decor - every guest was greeted with a Tutu skirt and a set of wings.

Sparkling glitter wands decorated the table and served as party favors, and we even had Fairy Rings - large circles on the ground made of paper flowers perfect for dancing round in circles in.

The girls loved the special menu - Organic Salad with Edible Flowers, Purple Power Chicken Soup (made with red cabbage) and Fairy Flower cupcakes!

Fairy Birthday Party Ideas for Ages 15 and Up

For the Midsummer Night's Feast, we chose a more elegant affair. A canopy made of clear Christmas lights made a cool summer's night more whimsical - bringing tree branches and flowers on to the patio brought in the woodland aspect.

The main colors were creams, eggplant purples, and spring greens, and a costume dress code was enforced. Which meant costumes! Lots of fairy wings, fancy dresses and face glitter.

Everyone enjoyed themselves, playing dress-up even us adults! We also read quotes from one of the Bard's most lighthearted plays.

The birthday guest wore a crown of flowers, and was hailed as Tiberon or Tatiatana - fairy royalty of the night!

A nice, dark Merlot was offered (with prior parental approval... this was a chaperoned event in a private home.) along with seasonal Mojitos.

Since it was an outdoor party we had lots of flowers and nature around. It wouldn't have been the same inside! There were candles lit everywhere and vases of leaves and rosebuds.

We had extra roses on hand (from the garden) to give out to each guest. So everyone wore roses in their hair.
