I came up with the idea of a birthday treasure hunt to add some spark to the same old ice cream and birthday cake tradition by adding some competitive fun and adventure. I have personally used this theme on four separate occasions with some great results – and request for more!
Items you will need for this event:
*Colored invitations (use "3" distinctive colors – i.e., red, blue, yellow, etc.)
*Grand prize (i.e., gift cards, bottle of champagne, first place trophy, etc.)
*Fortune cookies (insert "this is a treasure hunt" message inside)
*3 clip boards, paper and pens (for treasure hunt tasks)
*3 designated drivers and vehicles
Birthday Treasure Hunt Instructions: Provide clues to various local landmarks in your immediate area. Teams must make a note of each landmark visited of the "correct" landmark for points. The team with the most points is the winner – time allotted: 30 minutes
Birthday Party Instructions: Send out birthday invitations using three distinctive colors – including instructions to incorporate invitation color with your birthday party attire.
As guests arrive at the front door, hand each guest a fortune cookie – shortly afterwards, ask guest to open their fortune cookie to find the treasure hunt announcement.
Ask guests to separate themselves into groups based on their color – once the three groups have been assembled, provide each group their clip board, paper, pens and treasure hunting instructions. Then assign each group to their designated driver and vehicle and let the hunt begin!
The birthday honoree will be the timekeeper and award presenter. The winning team receives the grand prize and a personalized photo with the birthday honoree – while second and third place teams receive honorary token gifts.
I have awarded each winning team with a bottle of champagne and champagne glasses with their initials as a keepsake of the party. (Had the glasses on hand to show, and then had them engraved a few days after the party and given to the winners then.)
