Birthday Party Games : It's All in the Name. An exciting and increasingly challenging teen or adult party game is IT’S ALL IN THE NAME. In addition to parties, this game is a terrific ice breaker or ‘get to know you’ game. This game has been tried and approved at volunteer organizations, first day of class and church fellowship new member classes.
Most parties have a guest of honor, if not just pick someone or a variety of people at random. For our last graduation party we played this game with each of the graduating students until we were exhausted. IT’S ALL IN THE NAME is a great game to honor that special someone or someones.
This game requires little to NO materials, or to increase the challenge and excitement you can add a timer or a dice. The basic game is played as follows. Form a circle or line of the guests so that everyone can keep track of who comes first, second etc.
Make sure the honored person is up front and center! Take the name of the person of honor or the person the guests have chosen and write it in bold letters on a piece of paper. Have the guest of honor hold the “name sign” in front of them.
Beginning with the first person in the circle or line, have each guest yell out a word that describes the guest of honor that begins with the first letter of the guest of honor’s name.
Continue around the room with each subsequent letter in the guest of honors name until someone gets stuck. He or she is then eliminated. Sounds easy at first but as the excitement increases the game will become more difficult.
If you want to start with a challenge, roll a dice and each word yelled out must contain that number of letters. Or better yet, set a timer for 10-30 seconds for each guess. Or, combine the above elements.
Lastly, don’t make a name sign. You’ll be surprised at how quickly guests forget who the guest of honor is or how to spell their name. For example if the chosen name is Mary, the first guest might say Mary is Merry, the second guest may say Mary is Adorable, Mary is Rowdy, etc. Try this game in reverse as well. That is, spell the person’s name backwards.
The possibilities are endless. The last person standing wins! In addition to just having fun playing this game, a video recording provides a great memory of the day and gets all guests on tape saying something funny and memorable about the guest of honor.
In addition, having one guest write the words describing the guest of honor over an enlarged photo of the special person produces a wonderful keepsake. Lastly, everyone will leave the party knowing a little something more about each other.
