For my Mom's 50th birthday, we had an Africa themed party. To start, we sent out Africa themed invitations. I drew a Maxine-like woman swinging through the trees and captioned it "The Queen of the Jungle is Turning 50!"
On the inside, the parties details were included. To decorate, we got out all our African stuffed animals and put them around the house for a safari feel. We bought a stuffed, ride-able giraffe for the doorman and dressed up.
I was a leopard, my sister was a native, Dad was a tour guide, complete with safari hat, and Mom wore an African wrap. Grandpa made African cookie cutters to decorate the cake. Our cake was a sheet cake with a frosting map of Africa drawn on it.
The animal cookies were scattered on the surface and around the cake. We had a giraffe, elephant, ostrich, savannah trees and a cheetah. We also bought a length of giraffe-print fur for the back of the couch and authentic African tablecloths.
All of our African figurines, including the Playmobile sets, were placed around the house in fun little dioramas. We gave the guests the option to dress up, and many did. One couple had authentic costumes from Zimbabwe. Even our pets took on an African safari theme. Our dogs were renamed to be "African wild-dogs" and our cats became a lion and a cheetah.
The menu included "wildebeest" burgers, "zebra" chocolate/vanilla dipped pretzels, "lion’s brew" coffee and "kudu" sausage. Also, we had coke in bottles, as a nod to our favorite African movie, The God’s Must be Crazy.
African tribal music played in the background. Before leaving, all guests were photographed with the giraffe and savannah hats. We used these to make thank-you cards. Their picture was on the cover, framed by a paw-print border and the inside had an African animal stamped on it.
