Adult Birthday Party Themes : A Hat Party. I was an American living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, when I had my 29th birthday. Dutch customs are different than American customs, so I decided to take the best of both worlds. I invited all my friends for a hat (or head covering of some kind) party.
I wouldn't let them enter my home unless they had something, anything on their head. But, I also offered a prize for the best one. As I preferred not to be the center of attention unless absolutely necessary, making everyone wear a hat of some kind turned the attention to each person as they entered.
We laughed a lot when we saw what different people wore. I wore a cornucopia basket tied to my head with the point going up. It had several different random things taped to it.
My friends were also very creative. A photographer wore a stocking with rolls of film cascading down from it. Another person wore a pot.
Someone else had a very small hat that would fit a baby doll. Another had a hat that would normally be worn as a pin on a dress, but she proudly wore it on her head.
Others just wore various types of hats.
The winner of the contest made me laugh every time I looked at her. Part of it was her hat, but the other part was that it was so different from her normal dignified personality! She wore a green stocking pulled over her face. The stocking was filled with crumpled newspapers, so it stuck straight up from her head.
Her prize was a kazoo that also blew bubbles when it was played. She gamely played it a few times, which was really hilarious. The only time I was the center of attention was when I opened my gifts. The rest of the time, I was able to easily divert people. :-)
Everybody had a great time and talked about the party for months afterward. I think I might do it again!
