Adult Birthday Party Themes : A Hat Party. I was an American living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, when I had my 29th birthday. Dutch customs are different than American customs, so I decided to take the best of both worlds. I invited all my friends for a hat (or head covering of some kind) party.

I wouldn't let them enter my home unless they had something, anything on their head. But, I also offered a prize for the best one. As I preferred not to be the center of attention unless absolutely necessary, making everyone wear a hat of some kind turned the attention to each person as they entered.

We laughed a lot when we saw what different people wore. I wore a cornucopia basket tied to my head with the point going up. It had several different random things taped to it.

My friends were also very creative. A photographer wore a stocking with rolls of film cascading down from it. Another person wore a pot.

Someone else had a very small hat that would fit a baby doll. Another had a hat that would normally be worn as a pin on a dress, but she proudly wore it on her head.

Others just wore various types of hats.

The winner of the contest made me laugh every time I looked at her. Part of it was her hat, but the other part was that it was so different from her normal dignified personality! She wore a green stocking pulled over her face. The stocking was filled with crumpled newspapers, so it stuck straight up from her head.

Her prize was a kazoo that also blew bubbles when it was played. She gamely played it a few times, which was really hilarious. The only time I was the center of attention was when I opened my gifts. The rest of the time, I was able to easily divert people. :-)

Everybody had a great time and talked about the party for months afterward. I think I might do it again!

Adult Birthday Party Themes : Variations on the Hat Party

* Secret Hat Switchout : Tell everyone it's a bring your own hat party. Then have everyone put their name in a hat. Have everyone take turns pulling a name from the hat. Each person has to wear the person's hat that they drew the name of.

* Opposite Hats : Tell everyone they have to come wearing a hat that is the opposite of their personality.

* Weird Hat Party : Weird hats only! No one can show up in their typical hat. They have to be strange and wacky.

* Unhat Party : Everyone has to come wearing a hat that's not really a hat. Example, a colander, a lamp shade, a wire net, aluminum foil, a basket, etc.

* Wildest Dreams Hat Party : Everyone shows up wearing a hat that represents their wildest dreams. An accountant who always wanted to raise horses shows up in a cowboy hat, a nurse who always wanted to be a flamenco dancer shows up in a flamenco hat, etc.

* Sexy Hat Birthday Party : Everyone has to wear a "sexy hat". Let their imaginations come up with some creative ideas of what constitutes a sexy hat. This concept is sure to have everyone laughing. Pictures are required! Have your camera handy.

* Take lots of photos so you can have a birthday hat facebook page

* Hat Relay Race : Divide everyone into teams. Have the teams run a relay race switching hats as they go, kind of like the Olympic Torch but with hats!

* Instead of a bring your own hat party, make everyone choose a hat from your pile. Make sure to have girly hats and guy hats and really funny hats. Make everyone close their eyes when they pick one. Imagine a "trucker hat" on your friend who's a sophisticated lawyer or a pink baby doll hat on "the dude" of your crowd. Sure to be a blast!
