I have a great idea for a 50th birthday party theme. My dad turned 50 last year so I wanted to do something real special for him. You only turn 50 once so I thought I would really put something together than would make him feel like it was a birthday party of a lifetime!

I first collaborated with some other family members and got some good ideas together for the party. I even arranged for some of my dad's brothers and sisters to come in from out of state for the party. I knew that would be an awesome surprise for my dad.

I was on a budget for this party so I utilized a local venue that had a party room and was free to rent out. Then, I purchased some "over the hill" type decorations at a local party outlet store. I save so much money with these two things alone!

My aunt and I showed up very early to decorate and to make sure that we would have sufficient room and tables for everyone that was invited.

Now, the tricky part was trying to get my dad to the venue. It is not real easy to coerce him into doing something so we had to be creative. I knew my dad would go out for beers periodically on Friday nights with his friend so I contacted his friend and asked him kindly to get my dad out of the house on this Friday night.

Well, little did my dad know that he would walk into a room full of surprises! We invited everybody my dad knew. We invited old friends, co-worker, new friends, family members, etc.

My dad is also not a surprise kind of guy but when he walked in the room he was thrown back by the amount of planning that went into this event! To make things even better, we also decided to have my uncle's 50th birthday party combined with my dad's 50th birthday party. Soooo, it was a double party!

My uncle (dad's brother) turned 50 the previous year so we decided to combine these special days together. This may not work in all circumstances but they have been inseparable for years so they really enjoyed celebrating these birthdays together.

The cake that we made for them we decorated with their favorite candies on top, peanut M&Ms for Dad and Snickers for my uncle. This truly turned out to be a fantastic celebration! I would recommend a surprise birthday party for a 50th birthday for anyone. We have pictures and memories that will truly never be forgotten.
