16th Birthday Summer Luau Block Party

A Summer Luau Block Party: For my oldest daughter's 16th birthday party we had to be very creative. She is special both to us and the peoples lives she touches. She has Downs syndrome. She has a very kind heart and is always volunteering and assisting around the neighborhood and at her school. She got her love of football from watching many Sunday games with me on the couch, and with that love she has become the high schools water aide.

She has become and inspiration to others and even talks to the players trying to help them with their plays. So she knows so many people! So for her 16th birthday party we decided a large block party in a summer luau birthday party theme would be the best for her. We wanted to be able to invite as many people who knew her as well could, and a block party with all of the neighbor's involved meant there was space enough everyone.

We invited the whole football team coaches and all as well as anyone that she helps around the neighborhood. While she was at school we set up the back yard and sidewalks to receive all of the many guests.

Our daughter had no idea what was going on. We had a friend from church bring over a BBQ grill and gill hamburgers and hotdogs. The decorations were that of a Summer Luau. We hung straw grass from the fences and tiki torches everywhere.

We set up a small stage for her so that a local garage band from her high school that see likes could play as well as a system to play dance songs when they where not playing.

We kept the games and activities simple. We crowned her in the opening as the princess for the day. We had horse shoes and bean bag toss, these where all just to entertain the guests while we led up to her garage band playing and the football teams presentation.

After the party had been going for a while (it was just family and neighbors at this point) we had everyone sit down for a special presentation. The football team and staff all showed up and came before everyone and presented her with a trophy and her very own jersey which they told her they where going to hang also in the athletics dept. hall with all the other honorary players. This was overwhelming for her.

While the presentation was going on we slid in the garage band and then proceeded to rock out! After the presentation everyone was up dancing and had a great time for the rest of the evening. My princess was very happy with her simple luau birthday party.
