16th Birthday Party Scavenger Hunt

by Alexia Simmons
(Nantucket)

A 16th birthday party scavenger hunt for items that relate to 16 is really, really fun. We did this for my daughters sixteenth birthday and everybody loved it. As far as the scavenger hunt goes, having adult drivers is the best way to go. It is safer and makes sure that no laws will broken.

When the guests arrive have snacks ready for them to take on the hunt. Heavy snacks tend to be popular with the middle high school age. Think Combo's, chips and granola bars. I would also include a variety of soda’s, Gatorade and water bottles pre-loaded in the cars that you plan on driving.

Break the kids up into teams by drawing numbers or before they get there because it means that people will not get upset or leave others out. Give every team a list of 16 things that their team must complete.

Some great ideas for things to look for are buying $0.16 of gas. Getting a picture of 16 strangers at the same time. Buy something that is exactly $16.16 (include the money in the bag). Finding 16 cars that are the same color in the same parking lot. Writing happy birthday plus the name of birthday girl or guy in 16 driveways.

Have every group either have a camera or camcorder. When the groups get back, download the pictures or watch the videos while you serve various sweets.

You can get M&M’s printed with your 16th birthday girl or boy’s picture and the number 16. Try to make a snack mix using 16 things, the more distinct the better. Your party favors can also carry the theme of 16.

The cake could include small emblems of what the scavenger hunt was, or it could even be shaped like the number 16. Make sure that your decorations include the number 16.

It could also be cool to have 16 significant people in your child’s life prerecord happy birthday messages to your child.
